Youth Summer Job Program - July and August 2004

ivan.jpg

We are worked very hard and the youth employees are learning a lot.  Ivan is preparing his budget. During the first two weeks, the youth selected careers.  After the selections were made, they used Department of Labor data to find the yearly salaries for the careers they selected.  Next, they started working on preparing budgets.

We subtracted 15% from their salaries and then the youth had to search for housing, a car and estimate how much they would pay for utilities, groceries and other expenses.  Then they had to figure out how much money they would have left over for savings and retirement.

Choreographers stage and direct dancers.  They create original dance routines. Shanaa and victoria would like to study dance in college and become choreographers.  Their backup plan is to become teachers.

They would like to attend the Juilliard School of the Arts in New York. Their safety schools are the University of Maryland and Montgomery College.

Everyone worked hard to prepare their resumes. They had to list experience, skills, awards and interests.  All of the employees had prior work experience. For exmaple, they had worked as babysitters, floor sweepers in a barbershop, lawn mower, and swimming pool aides.

Ramece, Shanaa and Victoria also participate in the Police Athletic League (PAL) Program at the Good Hope Community Center where they participated in a leadership program. Ivan had attended the Youth Rock Convention sponsored by the United Methodist Church twice where he learned life skills.

Shanaa and Victoria spent a lot of time discussing dance steps, choreography, and college options. We captured the mood by using different tones in this picture.

Playing games was a very important part of the program.  It gave the employees and opportunity to get to know each other and build a friendly working community.

Shanaa Learns About Financial Aid

Shanaa discusses financial aid during a workshop session.  We held several discussions on the different types of student aid available.  For example, the employees learned about grants, loans and scholarships.  We also prepared a worksheet where employees had to list all possible sources for money for college.  They listed parents, part-time jobs and work-study.  We also reviewed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) form.
