WHERE WE HAVE BEEN

Since 2000 Today’s Family has been working with minority and at-risk youth in community centers, schools, and area churches.  These young people have worked together with tutors, attended computer classes, participated in Montgomery County Police Athletic League (PAL) Programs, and expressed themselves through film and the creative arts.  At every turn they learned new life skills, showed respect for each other, and thought about life-long career opportunities.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Summer Computer Camps for more than 40 youth
  • Drug Prevention workshops at our After School Program
  • Computer donations to area seniors, community centers, and churches
  • Filmmaking as a tool to share your thoughts and experiences
  • PAL Pool Party to celebrate elementary and middle school honor roll students

WHERE WE ARE GOING

In the Spring of 2007, the Today’s Family Board became keenly aware that the cornerstone of our work lies in the families of the young people who we have been serving. To truly affect their lives we needed to ensure a stable, self-sufficient home environment.  The focus of Today’s Family was broadened and redirected to include the families and adults in the community.  To meet this need, two experienced counselors/employment specialists, Ronnie Haber and Mariana McNeill joined as consultants and launched the Career Catchers program.

Through Career Catchers, Today’s Family is linking with a variety of community programs and organizations eager to utilize our expertise.  Just as we have recognized the need for a more holistic approach to solving some of our communities most pressing problems of poverty and homelessness, others have reached out to us for assistance in the career development arena.  Through the development of these partnerships, Career Catchers can offer much needed services.

“The job search went smoother with her support and encouragement.

Mana taught me to stay focused on what I really wanted and helped to bolster my self esteem, self worth, and confidence. She told me to sell myself with dignity and that I have more to offer than I thought.”  Shawn, job seeker

"I recently received a new job.  I was given credit for the time I worked as a contractor to my employer. Hopefully their new acquisition will open other opportunities for me to advance.  Thanks again so much for all your support and encouragement."  Melissa, newly employed worker.
